Meg Daly, Founder of The Underline, shares what the 2-mile segment is built on and all the new plants and trees that will be added to The Underline.
Video Script: Hi I’m Meg Daly, founder of Friends of The Underline. Welcome to Brickell Backyard’s Oolite Room right next to Southside Elementary. Miami Dade County recently started construction of The Underline’s Phase 2 from Coral Way to SW 19th Avenue. This 2-mile segment is built on 3 key drivers: Safe multi-modal transportation, nature and community. After hundreds of presentations and listening sessions, residents said they wanted wide, separated biking and walking paths, and native plants and trees to provide shade, beauty and to attract bees, birds and butterflies. We love plants and trees! We’re adding 100,000 native plants and trees in this phase alone. But some trees will be relocated or removed if they are in poor health or are unsafe for trail or transit users. For every tree removed we are adding FIVE. That’s FIVE! Plus, we’ll have our first of many bioswales to help with stormwater and flooding. Construction will take 2 years, but you will be able to walk and bike safely, have a yoga class or check out a farmers market, all surrounded by nature’s glory.
